  李约瑟(Joseph Needham, 1900-1995),英国人,剑桥大学李约瑟研究所名誉所长,长期致力于中国科技史研究。他是世界著名的生物化学家、近代化学家胚胎学的奠基人、英国皇家学会会员(FRS)、英国学术院院士(FBA)。1994年被选为中科院首批外籍院士。  他于1922年以优异成绩毕业于剑桥大学生物化学专业,1924年获哲学和科学两个博士学位,并于1931及1942年出版了《化学胚胎学》及《生物化学与形态发生》两部著作,从而在生化学界赢得国际声誉。  1937年,正当李约瑟处于其科学研究的颠峰之时,他却受到了来自中国的三名留学生的影响,出人意料地发生了信念上的彻底转向,“皈依于中国古代文明”,从生化科学转而研究起中国古代和中世纪传统科学。  1942年,他作为英国皇家学会的代表被派往中国,任英国驻华大使馆科学参赞。1945年出版《中国科学》杂志,1948年又出版《科学前哨》杂志,向世界介绍中国科学界的成就。  新中国成立后,李约瑟亲自发起并分别就任英中友好协会会长、英中了解协会会长,先后八次来华考察旅行,大规模地搜集中国科技史资料,实地了解新中国的政治、经济、科学和文化的发展情况。李约瑟带领一批科学家通过艰苦不懈的努力,完成了世界上第一部比较系统全面地介绍中国科技发展历程的巨著《中国科技史》(Science and Civilization in China)。  该书于1954年出版第一卷,旋即轰动了西方汉学界。李约瑟对《中国科技史》的撰写,被誉为“由一个人进行历史综合和文化交流的最伟大的创举”。他的这部巨著,有力地向世界表明:“中国文明在科学技术史上曾起过从来没有被认识到的巨大作用”,“在现代科学技术登场前十多个世纪,中国在科技和知识方面的积累远胜于西方”。这部作品推动了国际范围内对中国科技文明的研究,把汉学的研究从人文领域拓展到了自然科学领域。
